When was the Foundation established & why?
The PHCC Educational Foundation was established in December 1986 by PHCC members with the goal of helping their fellow contractors be more successful through education and professional training. These contractors believed and still believe that by helping their friends and their competitors, the whole profession benefits.
Is the Foundation a non-profit organization?
The Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit and gifts made to the Foundation are tax-deductible to the full extent allowed by law.
What is the source of the Foundation's funding?
The majority of our funding can be traced back to over 70 contractors, manufacturers and industry partners who have made major gifts to establish the Foundation's Endowment Fund. This fund is permanently restricted, with investment earnings used to provide funding to develop and maintain Foundation programs. These major donors form the core membership of our committees and together serve as our Board of Governors.
What is the Foundation's leadership structure?
The Foundation is guided by its major donors, with governance handled by a Board of Directors. This board includes the Foundation Chairperson, Vice-Chairperson and Secretary-Treasurer, each of which are major donors to the Foundation. In addition to contractor board members, the board includes a manufacturer, a PHCC association executive and a PHCC Auxiliary representative. A staff Chief Operating Officer handles daily operations.
What are the Foundation's major projects and activities?
Apprentice and Journeyman Training
The Foundation publishes a series of textbooks for use in plumbing and HVACR apprentice programs. The textbooks have been developed by industry experts and meet U. S. Department of Labor standards for four-year apprentice programs and are available through Cengage Learning.
eLearning apprentice programs to allow students without apprentice programs in their area to take advantage of the Foundation’s training materials. Online training for apprentices and journeymen is also available through phccweb.360training.com
The Foundation also operates the annual National Plumbing & HVAC Apprentice Contests and the plumbing contest at the national SkillUSA competition.
Articles & Advice Center
The center serves as the center of the Foundation’s online learning initiatives. These resources are accessible to contractors at www.foundation.phccweb.org when it is convenient for them – any time day or night. New business management articles are posted monthly and cover topics ranging from HR to materials management, with hundreds of archived articles currently available.

HVACR & Mechanical Instructor Workshop
The Foundation has partnered with the ACCA, AHRI, RSES and other key trade associations to conduct a national workshop for instructors and administrators of plumbing and HVACR instructional/apprentice programs. The development of technical education courses for journeymen plumbers and HVACR technicians is an on-going priority.

A software program that gives contractors a unique database that contains the standard time requirements to prepare and install plumbing and HVAC materials. This tool ensures consistent and accurate labor analysis to give contractors the competitive edge when bidding jobs.
HR Personnel e.bulletin
Contractors need access to current and reliable personnel management information and policies. The Foundation’s Personnel e.bulletin delivers timely and accurate information about employee human resources/personnel management issues right to contractors via e-mail. These e.bulletins are archived on the Contractor Resource Center, giving contractors a place to go for answers to their HR questions.
P-H-C Management Courses
The Essentials of Project Management Course is taught by knowledgeable instructors with experience in the construction industry. This course shows attendees how common-sense changes in the way a project is managed can boost productivity and add profits. Topics include proper change order pricing; controlling the project schedule; how to conduct turnover meetings; time management; and prefabrication techniques. A course for business owners and key managers is also available.
Scholarships are available to students who are enrolled in a p-h-c related major in a PHCC-approved apprenticeship program, an accredited two-year technical or community college, or an accredited four-year college or university. Each year the Foundation awards over $35,000 in scholarships with funds provided by the PHCC Educational Foundation Scholarship Endowment, A.O. Smith, Bradford White Corporation, Delta Faucet Company, RIDGID Tool Company, State Water Heaters, the PHCC of Massachusetts and Texas Auxiliaries, the PHCC Past National Officers, and the South Jersey Mechanical Contractors Association.
PHCC Overhead & Profit Calculator
Too many small business owners have not learned how to manage the financial side of their business, especially understanding how costs and productivity affect their profitability. The Foundation’s newly updated software tool and educational seminars help contractors get control over their numbers and make informed business decisions. A webinar is also available through the Foundation’s web site.
The U.S. Department of Labor is still estimating a significant shortfall in the number of workers needed in the plumbing and HVACR industry over the next decade. The Foundation is actively working with government officials, educators and contractors to help address this worker shortfall that is a growing challenge to our industry.
